We take a party of children on a residential visit to the newly-built ‘The Sill Youth Hostel’ near Hexham, Northumberland, to study Hadrian’s Wall and Roman forts nearby. This complements work pupils have done previously in the History curriculum.
The Youth Hostel is brand new, opening in Summer 2017, with Teaching Rooms, Visitors’ Centre and the stay includes full board. The best-preserved parts of Hadrian’s Wall are near to the hostel. It is an excellent base for visits to Corbridge Roman Museum, Houseteads Fort, Chesters Fort, The Roman Army Museum at Greenhead and Vindolanda. Entry to all museums are included in the price of the trip.
The trip is very challenging physically as it involves long walks each day over rough terrain and often in cold, inclement weather (the children walk 24 miles over the 4 days). It is therefore essential that all children who are included on the visit are physically fit and enjoy such challenging outdoor activities.
